Jessica Foster

Red Baron learned that MAGA fans have a poster girl who is in the US Army. Her name is Jessica Foster, and she stands for "America First."

Here Jessica is on a mission in Greenland with her colleagues Shaw and Raya.
Foster is an avatar generated by an anonymous artificial intelligence image generator. Many speculate that it could be US propaganda or worse, foreign government propaganda. Since December 2025, she has amassed nearly one million followers on Instagram, mostly men driven by hormones. So many find her glamorous, but she's not at all my type of girl.




She's posing with Donald Trump and his entourage and, as such, rubbing shoulders with world leaders.


And Foster delivered a speech at Trump's "Board of Peace" meeting in Washington, thanking the president for the invitation to the "Border of Peace Conference." Is it intentional, or did something go wrong when the placard also reads: "Border of Peace"?


Between many of her pro-Trump posts, Foster also prominently displays her feet. EuroNews writes: "More than a fake, Foster is a fake foot fetish model who is seen duping right-leaning men for OnlyFans cash."

There's no public record of Foster's military service, and on @jessicanextdoor, she collects direct tips from duped "horny MAGA men." Her followers have been interacting with her and thanking her for her service and for championing the Trump cause.


Lately, she walked a tarmac with President Donald Trump on the first day of the strikes on Iran, and this implication is troubling.

More and more "real" US service members have been wounded since the start of Operation Epic Fury, and an increasing number have died in the US war with Iran.

Obing

Red Baron was invited to a two-day birthday party in Obing, Bavaria. The jubilarian turned 90 and celebrated the event together with his extended family of over 60 people.

We stayed at the Oberwirt, enjoyed hospitable meals, and were invited to other activities, including golf, bridge, swimming, and sightseeing.

The hotel has a floating dock on the lake.
Of all these activities, Red Baron joined a group that first visited the neo-Gothic church in Rabenden and later the Seeon Benedictine monastery.

Already in Roman times, Rabenden was located on the vital traffic route between Augsburg and Salzburg, as evidenced by a milestone dating from 229. It is no wonder that salt was the main commodity transported here. This salt road also served as a pilgrimage route to the tomb of St. James in Compostela, with pilgrims using St. Jacobus as a welcome stopover.


The interior of the church is dominated by its Gothic high altar and side altars. The structures and figures, created around 1500, are attributed to the "Master of Rabenden," about whom nothing is known.

Embedded in the monastery wall is the weathered cartouche of Abbot Columban I Freitlsperger (1653-1665). Archbishop Paris of Salzburg confirmed Columban, who was prior in 1653, as abbot.

St. Lambert is a Romanesque column basilica with roots dating back to the 11th/12th century.

On our way out, we saw six remaining carts lined up in a meadow of originally 50 of an art installation from 2000 called LAUDEMIUM, i.e., contributions. These six remaining carts embody popular piety with their crucifixes, while the book symbolizes the famous calligraphy of the early Seeon monastery; wine and fish represent natural offerings, and the skull symbolizes the cycle of life and death. The chickens, again, represent natural offerings. One cart, bearing the date 1804, is empty, symbolizing Napoleon's secularization and thus the end of all contributions to monasteries.
 

On the big evening of the festival, we enjoyed not only an excellent meal, but also folkloric performances such as Schuhplatteln.



Classical music was not neglected, as our host is blessed with an exceptionally musical family.

Back when the world was still in order
A stagecoach run by the postal service stops at the Oberwirt relay station. In the background, Obing's St. Laurentius Church points its neo-Gothic steeple into the Bavarian white-blue sky.


On the last day, Red Baron visited the Church of St. Laurentius. I went in front to disturb the sexton who was lighting the candles for the upcoming mass.


He pointed out the statue and casually remarked, "Laurentius is the patron saint of barbecue enthusiasts."

Cooling at CERN

No, I am not referring to my cooling off following a full day of service at the CERN Open Days in September 2019.

This blog refers to beam cooling, or, more precisely, stochastic cooling of particle beams in storage rings. "Cooling" will narrow the transverse momentum distribution of a bunch of charged particles by detecting momentum fluctuations and applying an appropriate correction.

Stochastic Cooling and the Accumulation of Antiprotons
In 2025, the Museumsgesellschaft chose CERN as the plat de résistance for its traditional summer tour. During our visit to the site, we saw a special cooling facility. The building we entered is familiar to Red Baron. Here, he helped to build the AA (Antiproton Accumulator) in the late 1970s.


Simon van der Meer invented and developed the technique of stochastic cooling at CERN in the Initial Cooling Experiment (ICE).

Stochastic cooling uses the electrical signals produced by particles in a "bunch "to drive an electric kicker. This will kick the bunch of particles, reducing their transverse momentum.



The circulating particles (nearly) and the electrical signal travel at the speed of light. So the correction sent along the chord reaches the kicker well in time to apply the necessary kick to the bunch of particles.
When individual kicks are applied continuously over an extended period, the average tendency of the particles to exhibit wayward momenta is reduced.

Cooling times range from a second to several minutes, depending on the required cooling depth.

The technique was used to collect and cool antiprotons* in the Antiproton Accumulator (AA). They were then injected into a modification of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), i.e., the Proton-Antiproton Collider (PAC), to collide with counter-rotating protons.

While Carlo Rubbia proposed and pushed for the PAC, Simon van der Meer's stochastic cooling provided the necessary tool for its success. In 1984, Carlo and Simon were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the W and Z bosons that carry the weak nuclear force.
 
The ICE ring was also instrumental in evaluating electron cooling, a technique introduced by Gersh Budker.

Electron Beam Cooling is a technique used primarily in particle accelerators and storage rings to reduce the emittance (the measure of the spread of particle positions and momenta) of a beam of charged particles, typically protons or heavy ions. Dense, parallel beams of quasi-monoenergetic electrons travel with the heavier particles over the distance of the cooling section. The protons or ions undergo Coulomb scattering in the electron "gas" and exchange momentum with it, thus reducing the space coordinates and the angles of the heavier particles.

CERN operates electron coolers in its Antimatter Decelerator (AD) and in the smaller Extra Low Energy Antiproton (ELENA) ring.

This is where it gets exciting, because ELENA produces antiprotons of nearly zero energy that capture a positron, forming antihydrogen atoms. This opens research on antimatter.

Does a hydrogen atom fall in a gravitational field just as quickly as an antihydrogen atom? Are there differences in the emitted spectral lines of the two species? With the current measurement accuracies, no differences have been detected so far.

The CERN computer center was the other interesting part of our visit. Here, we were impressed by the volume of data from the experiments to be processed.

On the way out, Red Baron was abruptly confronted with his past.


On Display was the first paper by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau, which marks the beginning of the World Wide Web, the precursor to the Internet. Even today, the sequence of letters HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) for calling up websites is a reminder of the HyperText Project proposed by the two CERN computer freaks, who had no idea at the time that their proposal would change the world.

I had many a cup of coffee with Robert, a wide-awake colleague who was always up for a joke. CERN's superiors looked favorably on this coffee-drinking while leaning on bar tables, as new ideas were discussed with colleagues from outside their own field.

It was a thoroughly nostalgic visit to CERN.

Timescape


From previous blogs, my readers know that both Dark Matter and Energy are needed to fit data to the standard cold dark matter (⁠ΛCDM) cosmology.

Very unsatisfactory. Only about 5% of the universe consists of matter known to us.
Dark matter pulls things together, forming galaxies, while dark energy is necessary to explain the accelerated expansion of our universe.


As the MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) model eliminates Dark Matter, the Timescape model does away with Dark Energy.

The mathematics for both models looks complicated.
The Timescape model is based on evidence from cosmological data showing that mass in the universe is not as continuously distributed as presumed in ΛCDM but instead structured. There are voids on regular time scales and clusters of matter where clocks, according to General Relativity, run slower.


The results rely on data from a supernova database.
  

The data were analyzed and plotted against the minimum redshift cutoffs for the observed supernovae.


Overall, Timescape (blue area) fits the data better than ΛCDM (red area). However, the authors stress the need for further analysis on how the redshift distribution of supernovae and the probed redshift range impact evidence for cosmological models.

No reason for astrophysicists (not astronomers) to cheat,
but they should still be allowed to look
So, as with MOND, the data are not conclusive enough to establish a new “standard” cosmological model, but cracks in ΛCDM are widening.
